this. they've seen this all unfold. we're learning some talked to her in the moments of before she was killed. the salon owner called her the night she was killed because police had been by asking her about the killing of ricardo sales. he was killed in tran's home. he and his son rented rooms there. now according to "the times" the owner called her because he didn't want her to come in until that issue was settled. but when she picked up her cell phone, he was so upset, he couldn't understand her. he handed the phone to a coworker. she was yelling and then heard sirens. and then there was silence. a short time later, jesse borhi was killed by police. >> we always knew there was

something about him. she loved him. >> reporter: now, it's the relationship between tran, valdemoro and sales that police now believe led to sales's fatal beating. they believe valdemoro was jealous of their relationship. the younger sales is still missing. still a lot to understand and certainly there are some things we may never understand but it does appear this shopping complex is where the path of valdemoro and three of his victims did cross. you are taking a look at flowers left by a passerby. we had a couple of people stop us and make sure the person they remember here is the same person that was killed. they are still trying to wrap their minds around all of this, as our investigators in this case. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. another angle to this case, investigators are still checking efren valdemoro's suspected ties to the deaths of

two women in vallejo. police found their bodies in the home where one of them lived and where valdemoro often stayed. it's believed the women had been dead for several days. in another bizarre twist, it appears the husband of one of the victims was still living in the house. and what's more, police say 72- year-old charles rittenhouse had stocked up on bomb-making materials that he took from his chemical engineering job. >> when we located the chemicals, they were in a stable state. they were not a danger to the community at this point because they were not combined in the appropriate mixture to become a danger. >> rittenhouse is now in jail facing several weapons and explosives charges. stay with ktvu channel 2 as we follow the case of efren valdemoro. you can find more information at ktvu.com. time now k 70 -- time now, 7:04, a 6-year-old salinas boy

is in critical condition at a bay area hospital after being injured in a gun accident. it happened on his home on santa rita street about 5:00 last night. investigators say the 6-year- old found a shot gun under his parent's bed. his 12-year-old brother tried to take the shot gun away and that's when, according to police, the gun went off. the children were home alone at the time. police are have reportedly recommended that criminal charges be filed against the parents. there will be a funeral today for the 13-year-old oakland by who was shot to death last week as he walked with his brother. police say clark was killed on the street. the noon ral for the 13-year- old begins at noon today at the urban missions bible college on 105th avenue in oakland. if you have any information about the murder of jaman clark, contact police. san leandro police are

searching for the -- for the killer of a man shot to death while answering his door. investigators were at the home yesterday on drake avenue looking for evidence. police say the man was in his 20s, the man who was shot, as he opened his door tuesday night and he was found dead in the entryway. his mother was shot in the elbow. she will be okay. so far police have not released their name. 7:05. a teacher at a pittsburg school has been arrested on the charge of possessing child pornography. the contra costa sheriff's department says 26-year-old alice bursh was tangen into custody yesterday morning. detectives say they -- they took out evidence from the home. an antioch man is facing 200 years in prison after a contra costa jury found him guilty of molesting and taking

explicit photos of a young female relative. the jury deliberated for about four hours this week. they convicted 5-year-old kevin mueller of eight felony charges including lewd acts on a child. his victim, now 11 years old, testified that mueller molested her from the age of 5 until he was arrested two years ago. his sentencing date has not yet been set. there's good news from the labor department this morning. both continuing and new jobless claims are down. first-time filings for unemployment benefits dropped. it's the second week in a row initial claims dropped but the number still remains well above levels that are considered a sign of a healthy economy. the number of continuing claims fell by 23,000 to 4.46 million. stocks are staying pretty quiet this morning because the government's big monthly report on unemployment is due out

welcome back. authorities are looking for a bank robbery suspect responsible for a spree of robberies all over the bay area and near sacramento. take a look. the most recent incident happened last friday at a bank of america in auburn. on july 28th, police say the suspect went into a bank of the west branch in san jose and handed a demand note to a teller. now, police think this suspect

but it's very slow. if you can put off your trip in the santa cruz mountains in the southbound direction you would be well -- you would do well to do so. now, northbound coming from santa cruz to los gatos, it will be delayed but you can still get through. at 7:30, let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. this morning we're learning what may have set off a crime street that left five people dead in three bay area cities. 38-year-old efren valdemoro is at the center of this bizarre and complicated homicide case. investigators are looking at jealous rage as one possible motive. they now believe valdemoro killed a 73-year-old hercules man because he thought either the victim or his son was having an affair with valdemoro's girlfriend. the son is still missing. investigators are also looking into valdemoro's troubled past. >> he was someone who had relationships with people and generally borrowed money and availed himself of the use of their vehicles and things like

that. >> police have identified valdemoro's girlfriend as 46- year-old cindy tran. they say valdemoro strangled her during the high-speed chase that came before his fatal shooting tuesday night. coworkers say they were on the phone with tran during the chase and heard her pleading for her life. "i could hear the car accelerating and he was yelling at her. i couldn't understand what he was saying and i yelled for someone to call 911 and suddenly it was silent." apartment this point -- >> at this point, there are five people confirmed dead. take a look. efren valdemoro on the far left was shot to death by the chp. cindy tran was found dead in his car. the bodies of se gun -- the

dependable employee. that's why we're so concerned. this is not like him, to not be around. >> reporter: frederick sales was reported missing on saturday. his father, ricardo, was reported missing but found later that day bludgeoned to death in the room he rented from cindy tran. the sal -- the saleses lived at this home on crepe myrtle. police say valdemoro strangled his girlfriend to death during the high-speed chase. police shot valdemoro later that night after they say he threatened them with a knife. the three were involved in a fight. >> we're not exactly sure what that dispute was about. it was related either to the

housing situation or the romantic relationship. >> although police are not saying definiteny that valdemoro is responsible he killed two women. reporting live in san pablo, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:39. testimony continues today in the trial of three men accused of killing the owner of a popular los gatos restaurant. mark akile was shot to death outside of his home two years ago. during eaching statements yesterday, prosecutors described the killing as a murder for hire case. fellow restaurant owner, paul garcia, is accused of hiring people to kill akile because of a woman they've been been -- they have both been dating. 25-year-old gannon was arraigned on charges yesterday.

he was arrested after police say he shot and killed his fiance's friend, jasmine. investigators say before the shooting, there was an argument between the man and his fiancee and that the man had accused his fiancee of being unfaithful. well, the san carlos city council could decide today on an outsourcing plan for its police force. ktvu's jade hernandez joining us now. she has all of the details. good morning, jade. >> good morning. it looks like there's gonna be changes here in san car please. the most obvious, the police officers trading in their uniforms. the city just cannot afford their police department anymore. it seems that the -- that another department will be taking over. sansan carlos city officials did not want to lay off their police officers. so they shopped around for an outside entity to take the department over. the department went out when

the department promised to rehire those officers plus a bump in pay. they would also be exempt from layoffs their first year. the chief would still oversee the bureau for the sheriff's department. the only downside, part-time workers, and volunteers, about three or four, might not retain their status. what about the police department building? it would become a sheriff's substation, housing both sheriff's employees and former san carlos officers. the rest of the personnel would be based in redwood city's hall of justice. if all of the details are approved tonight, this matter will go to the county board of supervisors. the sheriff's office is tentativety scheduled to take over on october 31st of this year. reporting live in san carlos, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2

welcome back. 8:29. this morning we're finding out more about what may have set off a crime spree that left five people dead in three bay area cities. 38-year-old efren valdemoro is right at the center of this bizarre and complicated homicide case. investigators are looking at jealous rage as one possible motive. they now believe valdemoro killed the 73-year-old hercules man because he thought either the victim or his son was having an affair with his girlfriend. and that son is still missing. investigators are also looking at valdemoro's troubled past. >> he was someone who had relationships with people and generally borrowed money and availed himself of the use of

their vehicles and things like that. >> now, police have identified valdemoro's girlfriend as 46- year-old cindy tran. they say valdemoro strangled her during the high-speed police chase that came before his fatal shooting on tuesday night. now, coworkers say they were actually on the phone with ms. tran during that chase and they heard her begging for her life. one of them told "the contra costa times" and i'm quoting, "i could hear the car accelerating and he was yelling at her. i couldn't understand what he was saying and i yelled for someone to callen in and suddenly it was -- call 911 and suddenly it was silent." there are five people confirmed dead. the suspect, on the left, efren vam, was shot to death by the chp. his girlfriend was found dead inside his car after that chase. the bodies of marcaria smart
